On Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 December, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli visited our retired priests at George Maher House in Clifton Hill and at Justin Villa in North Balwyn to celebrate Mass and share a festive Christmas lunch with them. Born in 1946, the first of six children, George W. Bush was five years old when his family moved to the house on Ohio Avenue. The four years he lived here were formative ones, and the house figures prominently in family memoirs. It saw the birth of two of his three brothers and the tragic death of his sister Robin from leukemia in 1953. George attended Sam Houston Elementary School while the family lived in this house, and he began to play baseball. Like his father, Bush attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and Yale University, graduating in 1968.

He was told off-handedly that the demolition permit had been issued and the house was already demolished. Before the 20th century, the original house was lost, but the foundation outlines of Washington's house are marked. The public park was established in 1930 and in 1931 a memorial house was built in historicist style to mark the site and to represent an 18th-century tobacco plantation.

Following President Adams's 1800 departure, the house was converted into Francis's Union Hotel. Hardware merchant Nathaniel Burt purchased the property in 1832, and gutted the house, inserting three narrow stores between its exterior walls. The retired priests who live at George Maher House and Justin Villa become part of a family, living out their vocations together in the knowledge that they are ‘priests forever’.

Typical trees and bushes of Washington's time have also been added to the landscaping. The Colonial Living Farm has a barn and pasture, and raises livestock, poultry, and crops of the 18th century variety, using farming methods common then. One of George Washington's great-grandfathers, John Washington, settled this plantation in 1657 at the original property on Bridges Creek.
More is known about her than any of the other enslaved because she gave two interviews to abolitionist newspapers in the 1840s. She escaped to freedom from the President's House in May 1796, and was hidden by Philadelphia's free-black community. The President's House steward placed runaway advertisements in Philadelphia newspapers offering a reward for her recapture. She was smuggled aboard a ship to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she was recognized on the street by a friend of the Washingtons. Through intermediaries, Washington attempted to convince her to return, but she refused unless she was guaranteed her freedom upon their deaths. Martha Washington's nephew, Burwell Bassett, traveled to Portsmouth in 1798.
First Lady Laura Bush, former President George H. W. Bush, and his wife Barbara attended the dedication. The second phase of the restoration project will include construction of a permanent exhibit and educational center. Born to a wealthy family in Massachusetts in 1924, George H. W. Bush was a decorated Navy fighter pilot in World War II, who flew 58 combat missions.
